Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

Fishing on the lake has slowed a bit this week, but the storm that pushed through yesterday should hopefully help the cause, at least for the short term. December can typically be considered a hit-or-miss month by the avid Pyramid angler. The fish will be in close feeding aggressively one day and nonexistent the next. However, one thing we do enjoy about Pyramid in December is the weather can still actually be pleasant and the fishing can be good too. This year’s lack of storms, but colder than average water temps thanks to last year’s epic winter has seemed to make this the case. As a whole, we’ve seen a pretty good start to the ‘23/’24 season at the salty pond. This lake will always keep you guessing, and while that is a part of the appeal for some, at times it can be frustrating. One day it will make you feel like you’re the best fisherman in the world, and the next you forget how to cast, your knots suck and you can’t find a fish for the life of you. You might get skunked one day and get a 15-pound fish the next. In true Nevada fashion, this lake is a gamble. Sometimes you go broke and sometimes you hit the jackpot, but your odds of having a great time are always high here.

With the fish spread out along most of the lake right now, the bite hasn’t really been good anywhere, but could be good anywhere if you happen to land on the right beach that day. We have been hearing slower reports from the southern beaches that were fishing well only a couple of weeks ago. It appears the best fishing remains around the middle of the lake and up north. However, take this with a grain of salt. The fish are now consistently being found higher in the water column, and indicator fishing at 6-8 feet has been working well. The strip bite has been fair, with some fish preferring the moving targets, but most not minding the easy meals. It’s been a near 50/50 split between the midge and leech, with a slight advantage towards the leech, especially when waves are present. There is no clear bite window present, so keep those flies in the water and make every take count because if it’s one of those days that may very well be the only one!
