Lets Talk Hook-up
9-18-2009
Pete Gray
After a few down days, the offshore fishing has rebounded and it appears this great early fall fishing will continue. Better weather on the ocean certainly contributed to the rebound, and it looks like we are in for great conditions for the weekend and next week. Of course, always check your weather conditions before you go. Bob Vanian from 976-BITE and 976bite.com reports that private boaters fishing several areas are finding yellowfin, yellowtail and dorado within 40 miles of Point Loma. The most productive areas seem to be inside the 302, around the 43, the 224 and around the San Clemente weather buoy. For marlin fishermen, conditions could not be better. The spread of fish is incredible, from above the 9 mile bank, off Dana Point, the Avalon Ba nk, the east end of Catalina, the 499, fish seem to be everywhere. Just in time for the Catalina Classic Marlin Tournament Monday and Tuesday. Pete Gray will be on channel 71 as tournament control, broadcasting on the top of the hill high above Avalon.
The one day and day and one half trips from San Diego have also seen a rebound of good fishing. Most of them are fishing 65-70 miles southwest of Point Loma and finding a nice mix of fish including yellowfin, yellowtail, dorado and the occasional albacore. The long range boats are having fantastic offshore fishing for tuna, and big yellowtail are being caught at Cedros Island. The tuna fishing at Guadelupe Island has been tough due to the abundance of great white sharks.
A lot of our listeners have been asking about memorial services for Del Marsh. Saturday 9/26 there will be a spreading of Del's ashes at noon outside Huntington Harbor close to the oil rig- all are welcome to come and gather with your boats. Then Sunday 9/27 there will be a fish fry to honor Del at 1pm to 6pm at the Long Beach Rod and Reel Club- all are invited to attend and eat fish and tell Del stories.
The California Department of Fish and Game wants to change the lobster hoop net regulations to make them more restrictive. They are especially targeting the conical or eclipse style nets. They have set up two public forums for you to have input in the decision. the first will be held Tuesday 9/22 at 7pm at the Outboard Boating Club at the Shelter Island launch ramp in San Diego. The second meeting is Thursday 9/24 at 6:30pm at the upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, 600 Shellmake Road in Newport Beach. You are encouraged to bring your favorite style hoop net to the event.
This Saturday morning from 7am to 8:30am Pete Gray will be in the XX studio with Captains Justin and Jason Fleck of the Excel. The show has been shortened due to an early Padre game. We had planned to have the legendary Bill Poole on the show, but unfortunately he is out of town and will not be back in time. Justin and Jason will have some great information on fishing aboard the largest sportfishing boat in the world. With the upcoming fall season, these experts will have the hot tips on catching big fish. Rick is fishing in a marlin tournament and will be back the following weekend.
Sunday from 7am to 9am Pete will be back in the XX 1090 studio with Harvey Barish, joe Rocchio and Stan Morse from the West Marine electronics department in Long Beach. These guys will be able to answer all your electronics questions and give you the latest on what is available on the market.
It will be a great weekend to tune into Let's Talk Hook-up Saturday and Sunday- 7am to 9am on XX 1090AM or listen live on line at www.hookup1090.com. You can also listen to our archives from previous shows on our archives page.
