Lets Talk Hook-up

9-11-2009
Pete Gray

Although rough weather Thursday made the local tuna bite slow down, there was still some great fishing. Bob Vanian from 976-BITE and 976bite.com reports that private boaters fishing in different areas are finding yellowfin, albacore yellowtail and dorado within 50 miles of Point Loma. The size of some of the yellowfin is impressive. Bob reported one boat caught a 39 pound albacore and a 39 pound yellowtail from one kelp paddy. The private and sport boat have been regularly hooking bigger tuna, mostly off schools of dolphin. As usual, as the weather is up, the fishing gets tougher. The weather looks better today and things are looking good for the Make a Wish Tuna Challenge tonight and tomorrow. Good luck to all the anglers fishing in this event. If you wa nt to be a part of the lunch and tremendous raffle, everyone is invited. It takes place at 10am on Sunday at Silver Gate Yacht Club on Shelter Island. The one day fleet is seeing good scores on yellowfin and yellowtail, 3/4 day boats are finding good action on yellowfin and yellowtail . The long range boats are still scoring big on yellowfin tuna to 70 pounds at Guadelupe Island, though there have been some tough days. The Freedom from 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro www.22ndstreet.comhas been fishing 1 1/2 day trips offshore and the Cortez Banks with good counts on yellowfin and big yellowtail.

A lot of our listeners have been asking about memorial services for Del Marsh. There will be a private service Wednesday for family and invited close friends, then Saturday 9/26 there will be a spreading of Del's ashes at noon outside Huntington Harbor close to the oil rig- all are welcome to come and gather with your boats. Then Sunday 9/27 there will be a fish fry to honor Del at 1pm to 6pm at the Long Beach Rod and Reel Club- all are invited to attend and eat fish and tell Del stories.

This Saturday morning from 7am to 9am Pete Gray and Rock Cod Rick will be broadcasting live from Perry Ford of National City- I-5 at National City Mile of Cars exit- 2050 National City Blvd. Our guest will be Captain Bob Fletcher, former president of SAC and now active on the MLPA issue. Bob will have the latest update from this week's meeting. Former DFG biologist Steve Crooke will also be on the show. Steve is a wealth of knowledge on fisheries and fish biology. We will also have the Shimano casting contest with great prizes including a pair of Maui Jim Sunglasses, a Shimano Tyrnos reel and a Shimano Tallus rod. Lots of great prizes to give away too, just for showing up.

Sunday from 7am to 9am Pete and Rick will be back in the XX 1090 studio with Captains Paul Strasser and Mark Piasano from the Independence. Mark and Paul are great captains on one of the finest long range boats in the fleet, so the show will be fun and entertaining.

It will be a great weekend to tune into Let's Talk Hook-up Saturday and Sunday- 7am to 9am on XX 1090AM or listen live on line at www.hookup1090.com. You can also listen to our archives from previous shows on our archives page.
