Yellowfin Tuna Fishing Busts Open
8-21-2009
Pete Gray
As predicted, the school size yellowfin tuna fishing has set the pace for this week's fishing. Everything seemed to come together Wednesday as flat calm seas and wide open yellowfin tuna fishing was reported as close as 18 miles from Point Loma. There was a huge spread of fish, and a big spread on the size of the tuna. The majority of fish were in the 12 to 16 pound range, but several yellowfin and bluefin tuna in the 40 pound class were reported. Some of the better spots close to home for private boaters were the "425" , "182", and "224". Longer runs for the overnight sportfishing fleet were down on the "295" bank about 70 miles from Point Loma. Even the 3/4 day boats were getting in on the tuna action, with the San Diego from Seaforth Sportfishing seaforthlanding.com catching a combination of yellowfin tuna and sandbass all in one trip. Look for this yellowfin tuna fishing to continue to improve as we continue the prime time season.
San Clemente Island is still kicking out quality yellowtail at Pyramid Cove, and live squid is usually still available for those that want to have "all the guns".
The local sand bass bite of Huntington seems to have slowed, but hopefully will bounce back. Dana Point bass fishing also slowed, and we would not be suprised to see them starting to catch yellowfin tuna soon. Check 976bite.com or fishdope.com for more information on the bite.
Pete's trip to Katmai Lodge in Alaska was a success. Fun was had by all in the group, catching sliver and chum salmon, rainbow trout and dolly varden on conventional and fly gear. See the report and photos on the front page at our web site
