Fly and Field Outfitters
Trout fishing has been really great down on the Lower Deschutes. Steelheading is shut down for the year, check the MyODFW website for more details. If you’re not happy with cold-weather, head down to Warm Springs or Maupin. Things are still looking cooler than average for the week; however, there are a few days that get close to 70 degrees. The mayfly hatches have been blue wing olives, mahogany duns, and some straggling pale morning duns. The October caddis hatch continues to go strong. Other caddis are here and there, most are around size 16 in a tanish-gray color. Subsurface fishing has been lights out with October caddis pupa, stonefly nymphs, and mayfly patterns. The most productive mayfly nymphs have been olive, brown, or red, size 14 - 18 is a good range. Always try to match your mayfly nymph patterns to the most active hatches. Euro style flies are also cleaning up, specifically perdigons. Swinging some small sculpin patterns around to find a big predatory redside can be a blast. Head down to the Lower Deschutes for great trout fishing and the last warm weather of the season.
