Lets Talk Hook-up
7-31-2009
Pete Gray
This has been a slow week of fishing for the local sportfishing fleet and private boats, but things are starting to change for the better.
For private boaters, there is a good area of albacore and yellowtail under paddies along the southwestern edge of the Butterfly Bank. Boats fishing the area reported jig strikes, bait fish and lots of good size yellowtail under the kelp paddies. Many of the yellowtail have been big, in fact Pete fished Monday with some friends and they caught a 38.2 pound yellowtail under a paddy. Unfortunately, this was the only fish caught in an afternoon run. As the week progressed, the weather got a little better and so did the fishing for private boaters, but it seem to be a transition period with warm water and tropical species starting to appear in the picture. Marlin fisherman saw very good signs at the beginning of the week, Rock Cod Rick was out Monday and reported hooking one marlin and seeing several others in an area around the 209 bank.
Great news from the San Diego long range fleet. The Guadalupe Island permits are in hand the the fishing there is epic. Captain Art Taylor of the Searcher ( www.searchersportfishing.com) just returned to Fishermans Landing this morning from an incredible trip. Captain Art said they had phenomenal fishing on yellowfin tuna from 40 to 70 pounds. They limited out in one day, then the next day had fantastic fishing at the island on 15 to 30 pound yellowtail. The 1 1/2 to 3 day boats are seeing limit style fishing on dorado and yellowtail on the kelp paddies with a mix of a few bluefin tuna. The American Angler ( www.americananglersportfishing.com) reported great fishing on 15-18 pound yellowfin tuna 150 miles offshore. This is perfect for our Shimano/Let's Talk Hook-up 3 day on the water seminar aboard the Searcher leaving Saturday August 8- there are still 3 spots left, and Captain Art is running the trip, so grab one of those last spot by calling Dana Landing at 619-226-2929.
