The Metolius Has Been Fishing Well

9-3-2021
Fly and Field Outfitters

The Metolius has been fishing well. The hatches are fairly spread out throughout the day. Small tan or yellow caddis are mainly hatching in the late morning. Expect pale morning duns a bit later in the day. Cascades stoneflies (willow flies) have been here and there along with golden stones and salmon flies. A micro stonefly hatch is another major hatch during September. The second green drake hatch is just around the corner, it pays to be ready for the emergence because they could show up any day now. Nymphing is consistent with many different patterns. Green drake nymphs are one of my top choices right before the hatch. Various different stonefly nymphs can work great, specifically small olive ones and golden stones. PMD nymphs and caddis pupa are productive, especially when drifted slightly above the bottom. There are lots of bull trout in the system right now. The next few weeks offer some of the best fishing of the year on the Metolius, don't miss out!
