Fish Report for 3-23-2009
A Kitchen Jack?
3-23-2009
Bill Roecker
The Royal Polaris report for March 21, 2009 said, "Our weather continues to be gorgeous, with a slight breeze out of the northeast, and very little sea. It was a great day to be fishing.
"Before we started our morning, we had a pleasant surprise. We started catching cosonaro. (Ed. Note: Cocinero is a common name for several Mexican jacks, as can be seen at Fishbase.org. One of the most common is the green jack.) These are a small jack, and they are excellent bait.
"The morning started out slow, but as the progressed, the fishing heated up for us. When first call for lunch was called, the cows came a running. We had giants boiling around the boat. We would keep fish going for the next 3 hours. Most of the fish were in the 140 to 160 range, with a few smaller ones, but we did land two fish over 200 pounds during that bite.
"Lucky anger today for the Jerry Brown Line One daily jackpot, was Bob Wolfson, for a 248-pound Yellowfin tuna, but that was not the largest fish caught today. Chuck Thomeczek was the luckiest angler today with a 288-pound Yellowfin tuna. We didn't have a Wahoo limit today, so no one won the Wahoo jackpot for today.
"With things looking up, we made a tank of Flying fish, and we are looking forward to our next day of fishing."
The report for the next day, March 22, said, "Our weather has changed, but the fishing continues to be excellent. We had a northeast breeze at 15 to 18 knots, with overcast skies, with a chill in the air.
"The weather didn't change the fishing, we had excellent fishing today, with a few fish coming on the Frenzy Flyer. We had an excellent day today, with 40 Yellowfin tuna, and 12 Wahoo. Most of the Yellowfin were in the 110 to 140-pound category, but we did have 4 fish over 200 pounds.
"Our lucky anglers today were Frank Matsuhara with a 224-pound Yellowfin tuna, Frank Harbin with a 207 and a 218-pound Yellowfin tuna, and last but not least, Vince Biondo with a 210-pound Yellowfin tuna. Frank Matsuhara was the winner of the Jerry Brown's Line One daily jackpot, with his 224-pound Yellowfin tuna. The Wahoo action as slowed a bit, but we did add 12 to our count."
