Except for the catching part the day went according to plan. Unbelievably beautiful weather – grease calm, graced the effort. Gentle, long interval rolling swell, bright sunshine, crystal clear atmosphere, and an ocean full of every kind of life except what were looking for - marlin and Sailfish were abundant. To our benefit the plan to begin our day with a little action was a success. School size yellowfin tuna and a few wahoo got everyone in the game energized at the rail. Enough of that style fishing and catching by 0900 set the remainder of our plan in action; and the rest was history.
It was an epic day to be plying the outside waters. But the fishing, as stated above, stopped. So be it. Knowing what I do now I wouldn't have done anything different. I am 100% certain that had we found anything worthy afloat – kelp, a log, or general floatsam, it would have been harboring a log jam; conditions were too perfect.
Onward and upward now; the day tomorrow will be spent in pursuit of the elusive coastal trophy yellowtail. They have been keeping a low profile of late, but we are not deterred by the prospect of having to fish for them. The weather and scenery, regardless of the catching, will be grand.
Photo for the day features Oregonian Jaime Baird with one of his several wahoo landed duirng the past couple of days perched on the rail; a quintessential long range moment!
Finally another announcement about the new Guadalupe Island seven day voyage added to the schedule during the week after Christmas. A perfect opportunity to ring in the new year targeting 50 – 150 pound yellowfin tuna and tropy yellowtail at the famed island destination the voyage is currently 1/3 full with the remaining 12 spots certain to go. The dates are Tuesday December 26th, 2016 – Tuesday January 2nd, 2017. Hosted by Royal Star and sponsored by Blackwater come join us at Guadalupe Island on this exclusive, final 2016 run!
