DELTA
During this time frame there is very little action with striped bass with the exception a few fish coming out of Whiskey Slough to 27 inches in length by drifters using blue gills for bait. The big fish of the week was the 28.04 pound striper taken off the Antioch pier on a sardine filet. If you are at the right place at the right time the opportunity is there, so they say. The largemouth bass fishing's best early and late in the day working the weed beds and structure. Fish early with ima sticks and frogs and later in the day with jigs for better results. The average bass is going 1 1/2 to 3 pounds, up to an occasional or 6 pounder. The best fishing is taking place on the San joaquin River side of the Delta in most back sloughs and tributaries.
The inland salmon fishing season opened recently without much fanfare. I did mention that fish were in the system, because they are showing up in the Feather River and the upper reaches of the Sacramento River. Now comes the good news! yes, the salmon are showing in the Freeport area where anglers are taking some good fish in the 20 pound range trolling single and double bladed Silvertron spinners while shorelines are tossing flying C’s. The action isn’t fast, but the fish are receptive even during these warm water periods. At least this is the beginning to what could be a banner season for inland salmon fishing. The salmon fishing will only get better as we move into the months of August and September. stay tuned for periodic updates on the salmon fishing scene. Salmon fishng remains closed on the San Joaquin River and the Mokelumne River, south of the highway 12 bridge to it’s mouth where it enters the San Joaquin River. All other waterways will be open to salmon fishing.
SAN FRANCISCO BAY
Due to the plus and minus tides in the bay, the halibut fishing has been on hold, but in the interim the striped bass fishing is off the charts on the rock piles drifting live anchovies. most party boats and six-pack boats are scoring limit for their clients with fish up to 12 pounds. The leopard fishing producing 30 to 40 pound fish at anchor using dead midshipmen aka hound fish for bait. Three fish limits have been the rule lately in the South bay off the Alameda rock wall.
OCEAN
The salmon fishing has broken wide open outside the gate and bodega Bay with 2 fish limits the rule to 28 pounds. In bodega Bay Rick Powers aboard the New Sea Angler reports 2 fish limits averaging 12 to 14 pounds per fish off of Elephant Point. Outside the golden Gate Bridge 2 fish limits by charter boats and six packs off of Bouy 1 and the main shipping channel where the action has been off the charts the past few days. Roger Thomas of the Golden Gate Salmon Association stated that this is going to be a banner salmon fishing season this year.
Take time to go out and enjoy the great outdoors. Be sure to check weather conditions before venturing out into the big waters. Stay safe to fish another day.
Until next tide.
