Boom or Bust

A classic day of June offshore prospecting, traditionally a boom or bust affair, that yielded a definitive answer about the status of affairs down below. I can't say that the answer was the one we were looking for; in fact it was the exact opposite. Daylight 'til dark, actually a couple of hours prior as we threw in the towel late afternoon, we dragged the jigs, burned our eyes, and swept the ocean with four state of the art sonar's. The net result was zero – no fish; plenty good enough conditions, but no fish. Back to the drawing board. Not the closing note that we were looking for “it is what it is”. We are no strangers to the reality of prospecting offshore, and no Pilgrims when it comes to earning knowledge the hard way. And the beauty of this fruitless mission and how it translates into the next few weeks is this: it really means very little. I know – tell that to the anglers who just spent twelve hours awaiting the big hit, then awaiting a simple strike, then hoping for anything to stop the darn boat. But this time of year is transitional, always has been, and dishes up surprises more often than any other. Just because a busted offshore effort occurred one day doesn't mean that zone is a write off, or that the near future suggests doom. Recalling that we are seeking a perpetually moving target, one must shrug off the misses and focus on the next effort. It's simply a matter of time. Overall the voyage was a success. In fine fashion the annual June Larry Brown/Dave Berutich seven day served up a good time for all. These adventures of course are what one makes of them. The setting is fluid but the objective is not. The fishing, the setting, and the opportunity to share in the execution of one's passion for fishing all roll into one. In this respect we pieced together a well balanced vacation squeezing six days of time at the rail into an adventure that ranged far and wide. A broad variety of conditions provided strong contrast as we swooped, dodged, and feinted our way to the best possible outcome from both a fishing and weather perspective. Many thanks are extended to the ever attentive Charter Master Larry Brown who takes the success of his long range voyages to heart. Larry can always be counted upon to maintain everything positive; for that foremost is what counts. Closing voyage photos feature Larry Brown himself who toppled the jackpot order in the eleventh hour with this dandy 43 pound “Premium” grade yellowtail. Dave Ormsby grabbed second place honors with this sweet 40.6 pound yellowtail, a new personal best.
