Wohlford Lake Fishing Report

4-27-2016
Wohlford Lake Staff

Last Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday April 20th.
Next Plant: Catfish in summer.
Water temperature: At surface 64.58 f., 9.47 D.O. @ 15’ 64.40 f., 5.06 D.O.
Water level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.

To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

The trout bite has migrated west towards cooler, deeper waters. The final plant of the season occurred last Wednesday. Expect the trout bite to slowly taper off until it finally stops completely in early summer. The top baits have been powerbait and inflated night-crawlers. Oakvale Cove has been seeing the most fish caught.

The bass continue to bite. Dana Rogers of Valley Center caught and released a 6.85# largemouth he caught on a senko in Oakvale Cove. Bass can be found around structure and respond well to crawdads, swimbaits, and dark colored plastics.

Crappie are being caught in small numbers. Crappie prefer the cover of shade or overcast conditions and are most often caught on mini-jigs or live golden shiners.

The catfish bite remains strong throughout the lake. Lake Wohlford catfish bite best on cut mackerel or chicken liver.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
