Hey folks-
We are are a 2.5 day charter with charter master Ryan O’Connell. At the bait receiver we loaded up on beautiful sardines and then brought everyone in the galley for our USCG safety seminar as well as a seminar about fishing. For many people on the trip, this is there first experience Sportfishing or fishing at all so we showed them the ends and outs of how to use the gear and how to hook the bait etc.. It is great to see new people out on the boat and how excited they are to catch some tuna! We traveled a whopping 25 miles to the fishing grounds the first afternoon to see if we could catch a few Yellowtail and get everyone tuned up for tuna fishing. The Yellows were already waiting for us and we had a blast catching these 29# beauties and fed a bunch to the sea lions as well.
We traveled another 25 miles north to get to the tuna grounds. Weather was flat calm and almost no wind but there was quite the chill in air in the early morning. We saw scattered schools throughout the morning with 0-5 biters on each school. They just did not want to bite for us. After lunch we came upon a huge area of big BFT. Several schools of 50-80# bft and one mega school of 100-150# Bft. The crazy thing was we could still see Point Loma with the naked eye. Crazy how much fish is close to home again this year! We tried the BFT a few times but they were not in the mood to eat so we headed back into the east to look for the Yellowfin tuna again. It was there they finally wanted to bite! Everybody got at least one and the crew was hooking and handing as fast as we could. A school of Bluefin joined the Yellowfin for the party and we started hooking them as well. All the fish was beautiful grade from 25-40#. We are going to drift here tonight and try again in the morning wish us luck.
