Prospecting

7/28/15 A good day of prospecting covering plenty of ground. Though we did not encounter the Mother Lode across any of the new routes ventured we picked, poked, and prodded our way into a little something in just about every location tried. Combined with epic scenery and pleasant enough conditions for a boat ride ending sentiments about the day were positive; likely due, more than anything, to the fact that we clobbered good grade yellowtail in the end. It was the perfect finish to what was shaping up to be a slow one. Coastal aspirations now satisfied we head back to the deeps seeking to expand on the offshore species we began with a couple of days prior. This time good weather in the forecast promises much better looking and fishing conditions. Now to see if we can put it to good use. Plenty of time remaining and an abundance of perfect bait is an ideal foundation for success. We just have to find the ones that want to bite. Today's photos feature long time Royal Star veteran's Roger Hegyi and Ann Van Dyke with one of the many fine yellowtail they have landed during the last couple of days. Those who have followed the Royal Star fishing narrative over the years might recognize the young man wielding the gaff. About three inches taller than last year and that much stronger the twenty two pound class yellowtails that my ten year old son Duke barely squeaked over the rail last year are now hefted over with ease. He's become quite a valuable little helper on board over the last couple of seasons; a real pleasure for everyone to have on board.
