What an awesome week and weekend at the Lake – warmer temps, big fluffy white clouds, a bit of a breeze on the Lake and the bluest sky ever! And the Bald Eagles, a pair of Osprey and even a Great Blue Heron were seen out and about – quite spectacular! We even had a deer up by the Café this morning.

The catching part is finally picking up – we’re seeing more stringers of fish leaving the Lake. NightCrawlers, PowerBait and jigs are working at the Inlets. Trolling with flashers and a NightCrawler or just a NightCrawler, swivel and a bit of weight. If you’re using lead-core line, try Lures with some red on them about 6 colors out. Drifting NightCrawlers or PowerBait in the channels or around the rock piles. Shore fishing – NightCrawlers or PowerBait. Some fishermen are using a jig tipped with a MealWorm. Had another nice stocking from the DFW last Tuesday – they are continuing to stock weekly.

Finally another Desert Spring Trout Farm fish was landed - Tim Padilla of San Diego using Chunky Cheese pulled out a 5-1/2 pounder – what a beaut. Tom and Dillon Hughes brought home the fish – limits around. The Riley Family spent the day on our Pontoon, BBQing fish for lunch – can’t get any fresher!

One of our pet peeves is people catching fish, wanting to have their picture taken for the webpage and then trying to give their fish away. If you don’t plan on eating the fish you caught, please plan ahead – bring a camera to record your catches on the Lake, use good catch and release techniques by using barbless hooks (or just crimp down the barbs with pliers), avoid extensive handling, wet your hands, net and other materials that may come into contact with the fish, NEVER TOUCH THE GILLS, keep the fish fully submerged and upright, allowing it to swim away under its own power. If it’s bleeding, you’re having fish for dinner!

And they’re up, up and away – the little baby Wrens took flight on Thursday – they were there and then they were gone. We saw them hanging around a bit, trying to get their wings under them – it didn’t take long! Rick cleaned out the nest area and it’s ready for the next Wren family.

Looks like we’re not going to stay dry for long – the thunderboomers are on their way back into the forecast. Look for them to start making a possible appearance on Thursday and then thru the weekend. Temps are expected to be in the upper 60s for highs and upper 40s for lows – JUST DON’T FORGET YOUR RAIN GEAR! Keeping the info below in the report, in case someone missed it . . .

The skeeters are still around, just not in the hoards they were, but you may still want to pack the bug juice, but remember to try and keep it, your sunscreen and any other Foo-Foo juices off your hands – fish don’t like the taste or smell.

If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –that sun is pretty bright against the blue sky and the glare off the water. AND DON’T FORGET A JACKET and a PONCHO!

If your hiking with a dog, watch their paws – many ‘city’ dogs are not quite prepared for a long hike on the trail. Still seeing a number of hikers carrying their furry friends down from the backcountry this weekend.

If you’re planning on hiking – PLEASE BE PREPARED – hike with a buddy – leave a note on where you’re headed – when you’re expected back – what you’re wearing – take plenty of water & food – dress in layers – you’ll start out cool, but will probably warm up – CHECK THE WEATHER! Not only is your life on the line, so are the Search and Rescue Teams. Also, if you meet stock on the trail, please go to the low-side, that way if the mules are startled they’ll go to the high side and not down the canyon.
