Fish Report for 7-20-2015

Lake Sabrina Report

7-20-2015
Rick, Patti, Juanita and Jerrod

Its official, the Lake is actually higher this year than last year. With all the moisture Mother Nature continues to bestow upon us, the Lake is about six feet up the launch ramp. So if you’re heading our way, make sure you pack some rain gear – just in case – and don’t forget that jacket cuz those thunderboomers are still in the forecast till Friday, then we MAY be drying out a bit.

Not sure what’s up with the catching part – it appears the fish have taken a dive for a bit deeper water. We’re calling fishing fair this week – some were catching and some weren’t, but it appears all had a great time on the Lake. Fishing the Inlet with NightCrawlers, PowerBait and Jigs. If you’re wanting to troll, get deep – it’s time to bring out the lead-core line or just add some ‘lead’ weight to your line using NightCrawlers or a lure with a bit of red. Drifting NightCrawlers with a bit more ‘lead’ to get deeper. Might also want to try tossing Thomas Buoyants around the rock piles – Fish love the rock piles (easier to break your line on those sharp rocks - J). Shore fishing with NightCrawlers or PowerBait. DFW planted the Lake last Wednesday and will be back at it sometime this week for your fishing nd hopefully catching pleasure. Still haven’t had any more BIG Desert Spring Trout Farm fish caught – they’re still out there! But there is one less BIG fish at North Lake, Tom Cramp of Cypress pulled out a beaut of a 6-pounder using a MouseTail.

Many on the Lake once again got to enjoy the Bald Eagles - seems we may have a pair and a juvenile, also, the Osprey puts on quite a show when it goes fishing. Had another visit from one of the local Yogis – tipped over some trash cans, but so far has stayed out of the building. The wrens’ babies are almost ready to take flight – they definitely found their tweeters – squawking up a storm when Mom & Dad bring food to them. The wildflowers are a blooming – got a bunch of purplish-pink FireWeed out by the front door.

Forgot to mention this last week. We met Max’s rescuer – I was so excited, I forgot to get her name or take a picture, but he and his mom were taken in in Bakersfield and relocated to a Border Collie Rescue in Phelan where we picked him up.

More thunderboomers in the forecast thru the week, then it looks like we may dry out over the weekend – but you never know in the Sierra. Temps are starting in the low-60s for highs and we may hit 70 by the weekend. The lows are hanging in the mid-40s. You can check out the weather forecast according to Howard our local weather ‘guesser’ at www.MammothWeather.com. You can also check out www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA (which is the little community right below Lake Sabrina) in the search field and you’ll get the forecast for at the higher elevation. You may need to scroll down on the webpage to see the temps.

Keeping the info below in the report, in case someone missed it . . .

If you’re planning on releasing your catch, use barbless hooks (or just crimp down the barbs with pliers), avoid extensive handling, wet your hands, net and other materials that may come into contact with the fish, NEVER TOUCH THE GILLS, keep the fish fully submerged and upright, allowing it to swim away under its own power. If it’s bleeding, you’re having fish for dinner!

The skeeters are back in hoards – maybe more than hoards – they are just down-right bad right now, so don’t forget the bug juice, but remember to try and keep it, your sunscreen and any other Foo-Foo juices off your hands – fish don’t like the taste or smell.

If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –that sun is pretty bright against the blue sky and the glare off the water. AND DON’T FORGET A JACKET!

If your hiking with a dog, watch their paws – many ‘city’ dogs are not quite prepared for a long hike on the trail. Still seeing a number of hikers carrying their furry friends down from the backcountry this weekend.

If you’re planning on hiking – PLEASE BE PREPARED – hike with a buddy – leave a note on where you’re headed – when you’re expected back – what you’re wearing – take plenty of water & food – dress in layers – you’ll start out cool, but will probably warm up – CHECK THE WEATHER! Not only is your life on the line, so are the Search and Rescue Teams. Also, if you meet stock on the trail, please go to the low-side, that way if the mules are startled they’ll go to the high side and not down the canyon.
