Lake Sabrina - 7-12-15

Yes, it actually does snow in July – yup, new snow in the back country! And with all the thunderboomers we’ve been having lately, the Lake is up on the launch ramp and the second dock is floating. We’re actually up higher than last year. Thanks, Mom!

Fishing picked up a bit over last week. Fishing the Inlet with (you guessed it) NightCrawlers, PowerBait and Jigs (Sierra Slammers work GREAT!). Trolling Flashers (like a Dave Davis) and a NightCrawler, or a Lure with some red on it (like a Red/Gold Thomas Buoyant) or just a NightCrawler (like a worm) around the shoreline or rock piles. P.S. – The fish are down a bit deeper – lead-core line might be a bit helpful here. Drifting the channels with NightCrawlers or PowerBait. Shore fishing with NightCrawlers, PowerBait or Lures.

We’ll start out with the BIG catch of the week – Mike Castro of Seal Beach pulled out a HOG, a 6-3/4 Desert Spring Trout Farm Lunker using a Sierra Sandwich (now don’t come asking what that is cuz he wouldn’t tell). Grandpa Keith White taught ten year old Grady Foust the finer things about fishing or I should say catching as Grady landed his first fish using a NightCrawler and PowerBait. All seven year old Noah McClary wanted for his birthday was a trip to Lake Sabrina and that’s what he got along with a nice 1-3/4pounder with his brother Evan, Dad Matt and Uncle Mac. Nine year old CJ Trujillo with coaching from Dad Cos brought in his first fish ever – all by himself! Boy Scout Troop 915 was up at the Lake this weekend and Logan Robuck caught a 2-1/2 pounder using a Jig and NightCrawler. Scout leaders Joe Apocado and Jim Bergschneider showed the boys how it was done landing a 2-1/2 pounder and 2-3/4 pounder respectively. Justin Reyes using Garlic Chunky Cheese PowerBait brought in one of the Department of Fish and WildLife tagged trophy trout – weighing in at 1-3/4pounds.

The Bald Eagles are entertaining the Lake goers – seems we may have a pair and a juvenile, also, watched the Osprey fishing the other day – quite spectacular. Love where we live. The bear or bears are still out and about. We’ve got the trail cam pointed to the freezer – stay tuned. The wrens that were making a nest the Café door in where the weather instruments are located were success in starting their family – if you’re quite when you come up to the door, you can hear the babies – pretty darn cool. The Wild Roses out along the path down to the launch ramp smell and look awesome.

Looks like we might be drying out for a few days, but the thunderboomers are back in the forecast for next weekend – PACK A JACKET AND PONCHO. The highs are forecast to be in the low-70s with the lows in the mid-40s thru the week and weekend. Sunday’s temps may drop into the upper-60s for highs. You can check out the weather forecast according to Howard our local weather ‘guesser’ at www.MammothWeather.com. You can also check out www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA (which is the little community right below Lake Sabrina) in the search field and you’ll get the forecast for at the higher elevation. You may need to scroll down on the webpage to see the temps.

Keeping the info below in the report, in case someone missed it . . .

If you’re planning on releasing your catch, use barbless hooks (or just crimp down the barbs with pliers), avoid extensive handling, wet your hands, net and other materials that may come into contact with the fish, NEVER TOUCH THE GILLS, keep the fish fully submerged and upright, allowing it to swim away under its own power. If it’s bleeding, you’re having fish for dinner!

The skeeters are back in hoards – maybe more than hoards – they are just down-right bad right now, so don’t forget the bug juice, but remember to try and keep it, your sunscreen and any other Foo-Foo juices off your hands – fish don’t like the taste or smell.

If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –that sun is pretty bright against the blue sky and the glare off the water. AND DON’T FORGET A JACKET!

If your hiking with a dog, watch their paws – many ‘city’ dogs are not quite prepared for a long hike on the trail. Still seeing a number of hikers carrying their furry friends down from the backcountry this weekend.

If you’re planning on hiking – PLEASE BE PREPARED – hike with a buddy – leave a note on where you’re headed – when you’re expected back – what you’re wearing – take plenty of water & food – dress in layers – you’ll start out cool, but will probably warm up – CHECK THE WEATHER! Not only is your life on the line, so are the Search and Rescue Teams. Also, if you meet stock on the trail, please go to the low-side, that way if the mules are startled they’ll go to the high side and not down the canyon.
