Reason for optimism though production was still at a snails pace; every tuna landed right now is one to be coveted, one that puts all those prior barn burners into proper perspective. The sign is here though. Not enormous spots or anything yet to knock our socks off, but lots of subtle hints suggest that any stop may produce, or any day might spawn the significant change we are praying for. A little bit in a lot of places is what it boils down to. From the bridge perspective I can report that at least we are fishing; a much better alternative than seeing nothing in poor conditions nigh certain of doom. What we have to work with now is a long way from the worst of nightmares - thank goodness.
Best and worst news of the day is that we had at least a couple of shots at legitimate jumbos. That we couldn't turn those opportunities into victories was nothing more than poor luck - pulled hooks and the like; it happens. The positive side is that they are around. We'll take that as a sign of more opportunities to come. Photo today features Royal Star angler Chris Yamada who is nothing short of a piece of sport fishing history in San Diego. Master angler, tuna enthusiast - anything to do with fishing styles offshore, local, and long range has Chris' signature within. No stranger to the best of times and the opposite, Chris sets a stellar example of positive effort at the rail regardless of conditions. He is the farthest thing from a "fair weather fisherman". Whatever the setting Chris is out there giving it 100%. And in doing so he always seems to get his share and then some. There's a lesson in these results for one and all. Consistent fishing success is neither luck, coincidence, or magic; time in the water pays off.
