Gary Graham
Our most important "behind the scenes" guy, "Gali" holding up a yellowtail, a medium-sized model weighing in at 17 pounds.
This week's weather reminded me of the line from the old movie, "The Longest Day." "Wind and rain, wind and rain, won't it ever stop?"
Two days of unseasonal rain stuck in the middle of a windy week makes for a slow fishing week!
The whale watching crowd was out most of the days and only the hardier die-hard yellowtail chasers fished every day.
The only hot spot continued to be at "Piedra Blanca" off the white cliffs at Coronado. We don't like to pass up a sure bet especially when it is close to the marina and somewhat sheltered from the north winds.
An assortment of medium-sized yellowtail was landed on live mackerel and big-eyed jacks.
The boats with sardina landed fewer yellowtail and the typical reds, cabrilla and triggerfish.
This year's big pinto bass don't seem to be hanging out at this high spot.
Before the wind kicked up, the big pintos were mixed in the catch from "La Cholla." Cabrilla, pargo and triggers were mixed in too, but very few yellowtail and the few caught (close to the surface) were firecrackers.
I have a couple of photos for you from yesterday and a couple of rock huggers, a perfect-sized triggerfish and a mojarra, locally called the "platinum mojarra."
Gali is the guy who puts the boats in and out of the water, repairs and checks equipment, cleans and loads coolers ... the one guy who is seriously missed on his days off!
Hoping for better weather this coming week! I have a new reel and promo lures to check out on these high spot huggers! Another month for the action on top to start and I'll have some new light irons for those wet monsters. ... Rick Hill, Pinchy Sportfishing
