When it comes to coastal yellowtail fishing this is the way to get it done. Fantastic, steady action on beautiful, 22 - 25 pound class fish, began mid morning and carried on through mid afternoon. A few "shakers" occasionally flashed through, prompting the auto release response from one and all, but this grade overall is what we are always on the lookout for: good fishing.

By far the standout feature of the day was the action on the surface iron; the pluggers were in hog heaven. I do not know the exact percentage but of the "as many as we wanted" total for the day at least twenty five percent, perhaps more, came on the plugs. The insanely aggressive bites made the day for me and all the plugging enthusiasts whom could not get enough of the big yellows wildly slashing, jumping, and hammering the jigs often in pairs and even in packs of three, four, and five. In any case it was as good of plugging as one could ever hope to see. The fish were in that mode - fired up, aggressive, and serious about chasing down something to eat.

Between the wild antics on the plugs, accompanying hoots and uncontainable exclamations of amazement as the fish ridiculously sacrificed themselves in pursuit of their last meal, and steady production on the bait outfits of choice, the day was a resounding success. Throw in great weather, fine working conditions, and the completely unique, Jurassic scenery that identifies long range fishing, and these anglers take leave of this destination with a sense of awe and accomplishment; a day to remember to be sure.

Photo today features long time Royal Star and long range fishing veteran Tom Walker who is no stranger to the epic action experienced today. Chalk up another great one for the master who has shared so many incredible fishing experiences with us on Royal Star that it would take volumes of narratives to recount. The seasoned veteran took his time today enjoying the opportunity in every form. Here is Tom and Capt. Brian Sims with a nice one coming over the rail mid afternoon.

8/11/14 A lot of looking today as we crossed the bad lands heading south. What a desert; no birds, no life - a sterile ocean transmitting the obvious to my obstinate refusal to eliminate this zone entirely, before today. Now I am convinced. We gave this zone, above and below, two thorough runs in the past week. Now we can check it off the list for a while with a clear conscience. Setting up a few days of coastal yellowtail fishing...... 8/10/14 Gratitude to all those essential in resolving the bluefin tuna issue in Mexico. I know that all of us in the sport fishing community were unspeakably disappointed by the sudden, inexplicable mid July 2014 closure of the recreational bluefin tuna fishery in Mexico. The underlying reasons were addressed with logic by sound individuals skilled in diplomacy. The positive results, with ample time remaining in the 2014 summer season, speak for themselves. It is another example of how effective we all...... Read More
