A full day scouring the southern climes for endless sign of yellowtail that were small to medium grade. I suppose the best news about the incredible sign we rolled through today is the potential for next season and beyond; we're looking at a future crop of future twenty plus pounders enough to satisfy the entire sport fishing community.

But today's satisfaction was of a different caliber. It was good, a great time of getting lots of bites and pulling non stop, but the gold ring remained just beyond reach. A few handfuls of the grade perpetually sought were in the mix; the mother lode was not in our path. Another feature typical of "El Nino" influenced seasons often the biggest and best available are close to home. Not that this zone is any kind of write off, it's just overrun by pygmies and teenagers. The home guards are still cruising their haunts; we will find them.

Photos today feature a little windfall that was a day maker in every respect, perhaps even a trip maker. A few nice croakers have an incredibly unique way of eliciting smiles. I don't know exactly what it is about them but they are likely the most satisfying game fish to land on the west coast. God bless them.
