Fish Report for 7-4-2014
7/3/14
Idyllic setting here: beautiful conditions, perfect fishing pace, superb grade of fish, I really don't know how to draft a more pleasing day of coastal fishing. Yellowtail were the feature fish but we mixed in a few variety stops for kelp bass and exotics as the day progressed. Simply enjoying the time, conditions, and opportunity to fish for the sake of fishing stress free is a luxury not always encountered on these excursions.
There are times a plenty when it requires grit and determination, amongst anglers, Captain, and crew alike, to make a catch of fish. This veteran group of anglers has been party to just about every side of the equation on this annual run, and others, over the past fifteen some odd seasons. They have experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly. For these reasons today was recognized by one and all as special; a gift to be savored and thoroughly enjoyed.
Sundown saw us in a setting of ages - timeless beauty in grease calm; a rich atmosphere suffused in melting pastel before an eerie crawl of darkness swallowed the awe. Photos today feature a couple of worthy anglers triumphant in their moment. Steve Weddell returns to Royal Star following a lengthy hiatus demonstrating with this dandy, sixty five pound wahoo that he still has what it takes. Veteran angler Paul Nakatsuka displays fine form pulling on the long rod in the bow during an afternoon flurry.

7-3-20147/2/14 A study in contrast today; a stark reminder that opportunity is often fleeting on the high seas. Equally poignant now is importance of making good on the chances one has. There are no guarantees in fishing, especially offshore. In perfect conditions, the right water, the right place, at the right time today we saw and caught nothing. So much for those beautiful wahoo on this run. It was one of those occasions when fishermen simply shake their heads in begrudging admiration...... Read More

7/01/14 Real long range fishing today - exactly what, how, and why avid anglers come for. The surprise, or better said bonus, that these July eight day anglers enjoyed today came in the form of steady wahoo action offshore. Not exactly a freak occurrence, but not the norm either, opportunities at wahoo this early in the season are encountered in maybe one out of seven or eight years. The warmer water cycles are usually the trigger. Consistent with conditions we put together...... Read More
