A day of refuge is what it boiled down to: a few yellowtail, the lock jawed bastards gave us fits all day looking at spot after spot for virtually no reaction, and a few variety fish to go with a bounty of epic scenery and flat calm, balmy conditions.
No so much on the outside though. It has been, and will continue to be through mid day Saturday, a rugged stretch of breezy conditions on the offshore grounds, especially distant offshore where the long range fleet typically roams. There is no way to overcome the present nautical conditions other than to wait and try to make something, anything, happen in the interim. Mother Nature is flexing her muscles at present. Knowing where we stand in the pecking order we are not looking to press the issue.
Forging into day six however we are going to take a stab at the offshore scene tomorrow; time to roll up our sleeves and evaluate conditions. It promises to be a sporty adventure but nothing we haven't seen plenty of times in the past. Photo today features Royal Star angler Alex Earp living the dream at Alijos Rocks.

6-4-201406/03/14 A long, fruitless, beautifully scenic coastal sojourn in search of what ultimately became maddeningly elusive green mackerel. "No bait for you!" about sums it up. It was a calm passage though, and an intimate tour of this region's last frontier. If I had a nickel for every little copse, every savory looking fishing hole I longed to cast a line into today I'd have at least enough to fund the vacation and time necessary to make it happen. And I...... Read More

6/2/14 Much better results today; the kind in fact that define long range fishing. Steady catching on 22-35# class yellowtail all day long, with a few afternoon exotics to spice up the action, set us on course for new scenery by day's end. Opting to take the money and run, we are presently in re-bait mode taking advantage of the blessed protection of the coast in the process. A breezy offshore forecast for the next few days dictates at least a day...... Read More
