Really good fishing here today with steady morning action on yellowfin in the 70 - 140# class. While the big trophies eluded us the pace of action and production was more than enough to obscure the one and only deficiency. Well distributed among everyone at the rail the catching was thoroughly enjoyed by one and all. Through just before the noon hour it was game on. Then, it was game off.
For almost four hours we whittled away the afternoon awaiting another showing. Sloppy sea conditions made a sporty time of it as one and all adjusted to the newly introduced core workout demanded by such conditions. Thus far near flat calm has graced this entire passage; not so much now. The good news is that the worst of it, which isn't bad at all, not even close, is forecast to be short lived. It appears that one or two days of cross training will be followed by another extended respite.
Ultimately the evening ushered in another solid round of action on the mid grade yellowfin again distributing themselves widely among those at the rail. Simply put the main component of getting a bite was standing at the rail with a bait on the end of the line. Good fishing, therapeutic; the kind of production that sets us in ideal position to focus strictly on jumbos if we indulge in just a little bit more. And we plan to.
Photo honors today are enjoyed by long time long range and Royal Star veteran Chuck Greenstone. Something of a legend in his distinct presence on so many previous long range voyages Chuck is still at it and amazingly mellowed with time. Today's image captured the veteran in a moment of fishing rapture on the bow.

1-13-201401/12/14 The early morning found us well on our way toward a strong beginning. Plenty of action, good conditions, and a boatload of fish (and then some) in the vicinity promised the results we had been pining for the whole ride down. Then came daylight and the whole thing turned. True to their predictably fickle nature the tuna changed. The steady morning fishing of the prior five or six days fizzled as the sun rose higher. The fish didn't leave, plenty of...... Read More
