The bridge perspective following the past 14 days on the long range grounds is one of tremendous satisfaction, both with
production and potential. I can report with confidence that we have not seen a better September offshore picture in many,
many years. Between the variety, spread of fish, quality, and quantity we are presently experiencing the classic
"supermarket" scenario; that being those coveted times when a Captain has the choice of destinations to selectively fish
for what he/his anglers prefer.
These jumbo bluefin are sticking around in several different zones - rest assured we have not seen the last of the real
deal opportunities at them. The quality yellowfin are increasing in numbers seemingly by the day, and they are still
absolutely voracious when the boat even gets near them. The mid size, 30 - 80 pound bluefin absolutely will be landed upon
again - more incredible hits on those are forthcoming, probably sooner than later. I should also at least mention the
"wood" style yellowtail fishing in at least two different zones that developed during the past week.
There is a lot of good, long range style fishing being enjoyed at present; and there is a lot more to come in upcoming
weeks. As an example of a successful, seven day summer long range voyage a better example than the present run can not be
listed. Again the big three - quality, quantity, and variety, both in species and fishing destinations, were achieved in
ideal proportion.
Six days of fishing, the kind of fishing time I prefer on these trips, produced a fantastic catch of premium RSW product
from jumbo, 125 - 146# bluefin, to beautiful grade yellowfin and yellowtail. Dorado from kelps added to the variety list
as well as an assortment of coastal species including white sea bass and big halibut. The old "it doesn't get any better
than this" cliche could apply but for all those photo albums from prior voyages. There are so many ways to qualify success
on long range voyages that one could only paint themselves into a corner by uttering the above mentioned. It can always be
better. That is why we continue to fish, why we return.
Suffice it to say that the most important elements of a successful long range voyage - everyone enjoying their fishing
vacation and having a good time - were achieved. Our gratitude to one and all on the annual Labor Day seven day
(originally a five day) adventure that has seen so many interesting fishing twists and turns over the past twenty years
that I couldn't begin to list them. I will say that added up they provide fantastic contrast and perspective to the
worthiness of beneficent fishing fortune we enjoyed on this run.
Now it is time for a rotation as Captain Toussaint resumes command on the impromptu three day voyage scheduled at the
beginning of summer. Needless to say we are unspeakably thrilled by the prospects in perfect range for such a run. Captain
Toussaint's reports are due to follow as he takes the helm tomorrow. I will be joining my good friends Pete Gray and Rick
Maxa on my favorite radio program "Let's Talk Hookup" Sunday morning. If you are in or out of town give us a listen and a
call!
Photos today feature long time Royal Star and long range veteran Doug Taylor with a fine dorado specimen bagged on one of
today's kelps, and Dave Schock with one of his many beautiful 30# class yellowfin tunas.

9-6-20139/5/13 Opportunities at good grade tuna were few and far between today. The weather was up a bit and appeared to dampen their mood. But when one did find a spot to work with man were they biters; the right kind. Long dry spells between stops, and the lack of certainty that there would be another, dictated that when a good one was found the opportunity could not be squandered; big gear was the call, production was the objective. And produce...... Read More

9/4/13 It stands to reason with a load of beautiful yellowtail in the RSW tanks from yesterday that we would encounter more today; it's just the way of things. And we certainly did, but in just enough quantity to take a few more, pick off three of the coveted "croakers" that we were really after, and liberate a few more yellows whose luck was on the favorable side of the equation. Afterwards began a somewhat arduous bait making mission that was an...... Read More
