While far from over, we still have one more full day of fishing remaining, this summer seven day is the ultimate
example of why we have become so fond of these voyages. In our estimation they are the perfect long range fishing
excursion at this time of the year. These trips are able to capture any and every potential opportunity that arises
from local bluefin to wahoo and yellowfin at the rocks or anywhere else down below, and everything in between.

But, and this is the real fishing bonus during the summer season, a voyage of this length is not compelled by time
to make any long hauls if the potential to make a catch is better above. Focusing on the big three - variety,
quality, and quantity, the present voyage is a perfect example. Day one and two: bluefin offshore with varying
degrees of success. Day three and four: coastal variety with the main focus on yellowtail but the big white sea
bass hit an extra that could happen anytime. Day five and six: return to the offshore grounds in search of
yellowfin tuna, that we had a fine, successful morning on, then back up to the bluefin area for our final, sixth
full day of fishing time.

This is how we prefer these voyages to unfold. Of course we take them any way they come, and go to any length to
make it happen, but maximizing fishing time is our favorite result. Throw in consistent catching, and a good mix of
scenic and species variety, and the formula for a perfect long range fishing voyage is complete.

Before I get too far ahead though I must be cautious. Tomorrow is yet to come and I don't want to crow about any
results that are yet to reside in the hatch. We'll see how it goes with Captain Toussaint manning the helm for our
final round on the bluefin. Thus far he has been on his game so I expect tomorrow will be no different. Good
information coming over the wire suggests that the guys working above are well located. But bluefin tuna, with
their penchant for trickery, are famous for disappearing acts. Every day is new. That is what makes the pursuit so
worthy.

Photo today features one more big croaker, the trophy of the trip at 65 pounds, and triumphant Royal Star veteran
Steve Lee with crewman Blake Wasano, who was as happy as Steve about this magnificent big biscuit.

7/22/13 We covered an impressive span of ocean today, undoubtedly scouring at least four miles of surface in every direction, for a big fat zero on the bluefin; nothing, nada, zilch. The most beautiful looking conditions one could ever ask for and an effort consistent with our ability produced a few nice yellowfin and nothing more. It was a down day; equitable in this case with a swift kick in the groin. What a disappointing result for such sublime conditions. And that...... Read More
