I have to admit that today's variety effort, while a good time catching and releasing mainly Calico bass in
beautiful weather amidst incredible scenery, was somewhat unsettling in the near void of yellowtail we were
seeking. Finding a worthy amount of apex game fish to stop and fish for was a real challenge; and ultimately a
challenge we were unable to overcome.
We forge into day three checked but undeterred. The overall picture is still none too rosy - once again the
offshore grounds did not produce, but the obvious is obvious: "when the going gets tough the tough double down".
Everyone who has fished with us on Royal Star knows our affinity for that quote. It has served us well over the
past twenty five years.
Today's image is a father son classic that if nothing else serves to document the growth of my son Duke as he makes
his first voyage of the summer 2013 season. It seems that at least once during the past four seasons he has joined
us out here that I have had to share one or two of my too many to count proud moments in the daily reports. Duke
landed one of our three yellowtail today, in addition to numerous kid pleasing goats, while fishing a sardine on
the bottom with an improvised dropper loop.

6-25-20136/24/13 Wily, unpredictable, cunning, elusive, and frustratingly consistent in their ability to leave us hanging. Between those qualities, and a significant realignment in the water structure that had a good body of these bluefin corralled and accessible, we ended our day with only a few handfuls for the effort, and plenty of desire for much, much more. It was a disappointment, but not entirely surprising for reasons mentioned yesterday. The old saying "this isn't our first rodeo" applies. A little sloppy weather...... Read More
