Fish Report for 8-3-2009
And with the full moon came the bluefin that put on an epic show for anglers and thankfully included at least a semi biting disposition. I say that of course because of the notorious reputation bluefin tuna have for showing on the surface everywhere and not biting at all. Suffice to say that if everything we fished for today decided to bite, oh baby, would we have our hands full. Regardless of the lukewarm enthusiasm the bluefin showed for biting, it was one of those days when the small hits accumulated and the end result was a good score of just over eighty of the short fins with the biggest fish of the day pushing eighty pounds. Of the remaining bluefin landed, at least half were in the forty to fifty pound class. Combined with steady small hits on 15 - 25# yellowfin tuna that were in the mix for us early, we put together a very satisfying day. For a day of fishing I would give it ninety nine points out of one hundred for the epic visuals that accompanied the effort from just after daylight through our departure. Literally there was never a time that we weren't looking at or running on something that all anglers could see for the entire day. One stop after another leap frogging from one spot to the next. Needless to say the guys with the jigs on the bow were busy and sporting sore winding arms by day's end.
So we are off to a good start well positioned with a bunch of beautifully spiked, bled, and dressed bluefin tuna in the RSW tanks for the next move down to Guadalupe island. Reports from the guys yesterday indicate that the action on bigger yellowfin has not abated in the least with a robust quantity showing throughout the day. In fact, if anything it sounds as if even more fish showed up today. Again with the waxing moon near full this is not unexpected. The only question is whether the big yellowfin will be in a biting mood for us tomorrow and beyond. We aim to find out. Look for reports to continue and remember to watch closely.
I know many of you are still on the fence about making a trip and read many different reports while deciding which long range vessel is the best fit for you. Our fishing goals on Royal Star are sufficient quantity, quality, and variety all professionally handled, stored in 29 - 30 degree seawater, and delivered in premium condition for a well rounded catch. We make good on these goals in every way possible with the most experienced, capable crew in this business. It is a tall claim; that we back up on every voyage. Most importantly, we are focused on our anglers feeling welcome, comfortable, and having a good time. In the process we educate and develop everyone's angling skills preparing all for whatever fishing they will encounter on Royal Star and beyond. As I recommended, read all the reports carefully. The content of all the daily reports from vessels fishing out here tells anglers just about everything they need to chose a time and make a trip. I trust that everyone one reading is as smart as I, probably smarter, so the nuances and information between the lines will not be missed. Regardless of which vessel you choose to make your voyage the most important thing is that you get out there and go fishing. There has never been a better time. Every long range vessel is getting fish everywhere. This is an exceptional season.

8-2-2009A smooth turn around and back at it by 1130 departing on our eighth annual Jason Hammond five day voyage with a stellar group of ready anglers itching to get in on the action. A significant weather change on the outside will most certainly influence what has been but with the full moon coming and the spread of fish off shore I remain optimistic about our prospects. We will begin our fishing at daylight tomorrow hammering away at whatever we...... Read More

A couple of things we gathered from yesterday's effort. One, the amount of fish around points to an incredible August, and probably September, of "mixed bag" offshore fishing with signs of Albacore, bluefin, yellowfin, yellowtail, and dorado scattered over a huge stretch of ocean. Two, it appears that everything is pushing northward indicating a good run on the local grounds is soon to come. For all the local guys sake we certainly hope so as they have toughed out a......
