You know we were living right when the one thing we were really looking for came on strong in our final round at Alijos. The weather greased off and the Wahoo came up schooling near the surface in classic "dog packs" that we hammered away at through mid afternoon. This was a great opportunity for anglers to experience the reality of Wahoo fishing that naturally comes with every calamity and way to lose a fish that one can imagine. Even when everyone is doing it right, using perfect equipment, and on their game a good Wahoo stop can reduce us to pure damage control as their spirited hi jinks result in thrown hooks, broken wire, broken hooks, broken lures, sheared monofilament, fish snagged under the boat, and lines joining in catastrophic unions. As on so many previous occasions, we witnessed every one of these disasters today, sometimes simultaneously, coming out of one stop in particular shaking our heads at the difficulty catching these devils can present to even the most experienced anglers. Mind you that all of these scenarios are typical of Wahoo fishing, especially when using live bait, so such occasions are accompanied by much laughter, camaraderie, and statements of shared disbelief as one fish after another hand anglers their lunch while they do their very best to reverse the equation.

Of course in the end we tend to get our share as the first red hot one or two stops where the real disasters tend to occur fade into more manageable short stops for a handful or two of fish. Today was no exception as we departed Alijos with almost sixty of the speedsters for a few hours of effort. Combined with the phenomenal fishing for yellowfin tuna we bid Alijos farewell with immense satisfaction and gratitude as the entire three days spent in this fishing paradise was a long range angler's dream come true. We are presently fish heavy so the focus is now on pure quality as we head north with plans to cherry pick a few island spots for big yellows tomorrow before continuing the northward trek. With such tremendous luck gracing the effort thus far our final day plans include a push for big bluefin offshore. A good weather forecast, plenty of time, and a beautiful catch already in the hatch command as such. Tomorrow first however as we look forward to continuing the trend already established. Times are good down here. As I said a couple of days past, this is long range fishing at its finest.
