Fish Report for 5-13-2008
Today's selections feature anglers Greg Koontz and "Alaska Mike" Norenberg. Greg, Captain Brian Sims, and I are sharing one of Greg's many victorious moments in the photo taken on deck while the solo photo of Greg working on a big one was taken at Isla Socorro. Greg joined us on Royal Star for the first time this voyage bringing with him half a dozen of our favorite OTR harnesses that are manufactured by his business partner Lon Mikkelson in Oregon. Needless to say they were all put to good use and many thanks to Greg for enabling us to introduce, and in the process convert, a few more anglers to the huge advantage a quality harness like the OTR can make when battling giant yellowfin tuna.
Our good friend "Alaska Mike" Noremberg joins us several times annually all the way from Fairbanks Alaska where giant yellowfin tuna fishermen are likely a rare few. In fact, Mike may be the only one. Regardless, we are thankful that Mike joined us on this voyage that was converted from a regular fly down/fly back ten day back in January. Mike ventured the trip to see what the tagging program was all about and was rewarded with the best fishing he has ever seen. Thanks for the vote of confidence Mike and we hope that your effort towards tagging all those big yellowfin tuna will pay big dividends for science.

5-12-2008Prior to the April tagging voyage Tim Shields was new to the Revillagigedo island routine and giant yellowfin tuna angling. Tim was well prepared for the trip with perfect equipment and preparation overseen by his good friend Bill Grimsley and a host of other long range veterans. The advantages of using the big gear when targeting giant yellowfin made the right impression on Mr. Shields as he wielded Cal Sheets' custom "80" with authority during many battles with giant yellowfin....... A couple of great action shots today featuring another fantastic fisherman and long time Royal Star veteran Dr. Andy Cooperman. Andy was among the fortunate group in our final evening go around to tie in to one of those mega cows that wound up taping 271. There were many memorable battles throughout the voyage but the final round was epic as that last fish was highly motivated challenging all of us to the extent of our abilities. Even after we......
