We made another fine day of it here at Isla Clarion successfully releasing about twenty yellowfin tuna in the 100 - 170# class with a couple of standouts at 214 for Gary "Big Fish" Sato and just shy of two hundred for Dave Hall. The wahoo action held up as well with thirty of the speedsters tagged and released from a few hours in a zone opposite of our successful area yesterday. The smaller fifteen to thirty pound yellowfin tuna, that similar to Roca Partida have completely overrun this island, also provided plenty of "jerkin and pullin" action as just about every time we stopped to land wahoo they joined the fray eager to take their part of whatever was being offered. Throw in another dozen incidental yellowfin in the fifty to ninety pound class and one can see that the continual action, wherever we stopped the boat, had most anglers satiated and exhausted by day's end.
The one significant challenge in the mix is the incorrigible shark population that seemed to be more prevalent today and a real test of some anglers patience. Perseverance is the key to success in these situations as every angler boasting victory must "kiss a few frogs" to earn their prize. Thankfully, in the case of landing the better size tuna, the sharks are leaving the majority alone, but they are definitely keyed in on the hook baits aggressively competing with the tuna for their share. Such is, and always has been, the fishery at these islands. The rewards, as anglers who visit the Revillagigedo's will attest to, are well worth it.
With the phenomenal signs of life here, beautiful weather in the forecast, plenty of time, plenty of bait, and a group of anglers ready to make the most of it, we are sticking with the plan to remain at Clarion for at least a few more days. Between the heavenly night time anchorage, incredible catching potential and beautiful scenery, a fisherman with genuine passion for the sport and ocean could not find themselves in a better place.
