Royal Star Fish Report

Royal Star

Well it finally happened. Just as our number came up two days prior and we begrudingly accepted our turn in the barrel, our number came up again today on the opposite side of the equation. Before I trumpet our success, that believe me is worth a few paragraphs, I must give proper credit again to being a member of our immensely valuable code group that working together found the fish, and capitalized on the opportunities today. At daylight we were actually fifteen miles from where it happened maintaining the ever important spread between boats that enables us to collectively cover such tremendous amounts of area. One call just after daylight and we were flying towards the zone that ended up being at it's best for only about five or six hours. Had we not received the call, or not had access to the information, it likely would have been a very different day.

It wasn't though. We made the move, got right in the game, and began what was to become an epic day of action on giant yellowfin with five big bruisers over two twenty five, and about twenty five others from 140 - 195#. Throw in a handful of other "smaller" seventy to one twenties and it made for a fitting, Ekstrom trademark ninth inning spectacular finish to our trip. Probably as good as the action itself was the fantastic change of pace as our entire day consisted of two prolonged drifts that enabled every angler to spend all the time he/she wished at the rail fishing as opposed to the "run and gun" style fishing we had been practicing the previous two days. The ability to settle in, watch the dramatic spectacle of huge yellowfin plowing through baits all around the boat, and enjoy the whole picture free of the sometimes frantic pace of offshore tuna fishing is a coveted opportunity. Not that we don't enjoy or appreciate wide open action. A good mix of both styles on any voyage is simply ideal.

That said we had our fill of drift style action yesterday that again proved the statement I made a couple of days prior about the law of averages applying to every mortal out here. I'd love to tell you that we found the secret method, or had an extra edge to oust our competitors, or were the best because of some secret technology we possess, but I can't. Yes we put ourselves in the right place at the right time. Yes we managed our bait supply to take full advantage of such an opportunity if and when it came along. Yes the local knowledge we have acquired from fishing this area extensively during the past five seasons was a huge factor in the equation. But, a disproportionate share of good luck is what made the biggest difference between our incredible score and an average score today. Not that we didn't earn it. We, or more appropriately I, have taken some lumps down here during the past couple of voyages so perhaps today's success was more about justice than luck. I'll let you all decide. Either way we will take it.

So now it is time to travel and recover making our way up the line in improving weather and a much improved sea state. That was one feature of yesterday afternoon Swiss Omega Replica watches Cartier Tankissime Replica Watches Omega Constellation Replica Watches I did not mention. These anglers defintiely earned their stripes late in the day struggling through twenty to thirty knots of breeze, driving rain, and a hideous accompanying sea state to make the catch they did. It was quite a contrast from the grease calm, lake like conditions we were enjoying mid morning. Needless to say the boys were earning their wages, and also due respect, as such conditions make every task about ten times more difficult to perform. We managed however, and are presently making our way north with an incredible catch of the most beautiful, perfectly cared for trophy yellowfin in the RSW tanks one can imagine. I have more to report but have rambled on plenty for now. Look for tomorrow's post with more details.

After the bruising we took adhering to the purist pursuit of trophy yellowfin yesterday, we were in no mood to maintain such exclusive standards today. Yes we lowered the bar considerably suffering through an entire day of nonstop action on yellowfin tuna in the 30 - 100# class with about forty in the sixty to ninety pound range. Needless to say we were ready for some action and today's opportunity fit the bill with every angler at the rail every...... Read More

To put it lightly we bombed today with our inevitable turn in the barrel demonstrating again that the law of averages is always impartial. When your number comes up there are no alternatives. One must simply take the bruising and forge ahead. The good news for our ego is that it was a down day on the big fish with only a handful of fish above one hundred fifty pounds taken collectively among us. So, thankfully we didn't miss any......
