Royal Star Fish Report

Royal Star

What a difference a day makes. In today's case the wait was worth it as the exact same fish we worked so hard to convince yesterday let down their guard a bit and provided our anglers with a bona fide opportunity to catch a trophy class, Giant Yellowfin Tuna. Sixteen fish was the total score for the day with twelve of the beasts coming in over the two hundred mark and a couple at two ninety seven and two ninety two that just missed the magic three hundred. In addition to the couple of two nineties were four others from two sixty five to two seventy six and only two were under two hundred thirty pounds! Needless to say there are some real bruisers around as evidenced by what we landed and even more so by what we witnessed. I can say with certainty that what we landed was just the tip of the iceberg as there were four of us down here today that all saw identical sign while remaining miles apart. What an incredible showing of big fish that still demonstrated the more wary side of their nature, but cooperated enough to prove to this group of anglers that this is indeed the real deal. On four different occasions as we were heading for a spot of big fish, the entire school erupted chasing panicked local baits while we slid into position ready to join the action. Needless to say the experience of running a spot of breaking fish elevates to a whole new level when huge tuna, literally so big it can be difficult to differentiate them from the dolphins mixed in the fray, are carving massive craters in the ocean surface after flying five feet out of the water; no trouble identifying those ones.

As you can all imagine I have plenty more to say but will sign off for now. We have absolutely perfect working conditions with ideal weather, and more than a little luck, being the main components in today's success. Tomorrow's forecast promises more of the same and as such we are remaining in this zone with plans to give it at least one, if not two more full days. We have high hopes for another day of opportunity tomorrow and will keep you posted with the results.

Well, it was one of those days that one wishes would have turned out different; not from a lack of fish or poor conditions, but from a area of giant yellowfin tuna exhibiting a finicky appetite with almost zero taste for baits with hooks in them. Seeing the fish was not the issue for all three of us working in this zone. In fact, the area of scattered big fish today extended well beyond anything seen during the past week....... Read More

We got off on the right foot with some good afternoon action on twelve to twenty five pound yellowfin optimistically electing to release and send a few to the galley in preparation for what we hope will be good action on Giant yellowfin tomorrow and beyond. By all accounts the fish made a showing down below again today but seemed a little less eager to bite than the previous three or four days. With a perfect forecast predicting flat calm...... Read More
