Captain Johns Fish Report 10-27-07

10-27-2007
Johnny Williams

Today's offshore fishing trip by the partyboat Capt. John had a bit of those breezy and bumpy conditions to deal with. Exiting Galveston Bay and making a southerly turn, Capt. Tony Langston started the offshore run. Their first stops were over bottom structure about 35 miles out. After fishing that area for a bit, a move was made inshore to the old Buccaneer platform wrecks.

The efforts of the 79 fishermen along with their cut squid or whole Spanish sardine baits reeled in this catch:
?Ģ 134 red snapper to 10#, just 12 short of a limit
?Ģ 32 lane snapper
?Ģ 8 mangrove snapper to 6#
?Ģ 38 Atlantic spadefish, a.k.a. tiger snapper
?Ģ 1 bonnethead shark
?Ģ 2 rockhind grouper
?Ģ 1 Warsaw grouper
?Ģ 1 Florida pompano
?Ģ 2 kingfish

Ronnie Vaughn, Allen, had a red snapper limit to 8# and the trip's Florida pompano, all on a sardine tipped, 1/2 oz. pink/chartreuse Snapper Slapper Jr.
Frank Gonzales, Dallas, with the trip's only two kingfish and a red snapper limit to 8#.
Jennifer Anderson, Dallas, her red snapper limit went to 7#.
Jerry McCullin, Texas City, a red snapper limit to 7#.
Aaron Hardin, Texas City, Jerry's 9 year old grandson, had a red snapper limit to 8# that was taken on a torpedo sinker rig with Spanish sardine baits.
Brett Cornelius, Warsaw ??? No, he didn't catch the trip's Warsaw grouper, but he did reel up the trip's bonnethead shark and a red snapper limit to 8# on Carolina rigged Spanish sardines.

While today's trip was twelve short of a red snapper limit for all 79 fishermen, this was another of those multi-species catches. The bonnethead shark and Florida pompano were a bit unusual and bring out the point that you never know who's going to catch what on any trip.

The truly bad part of this trip is that, as of this writing, the combination of Sunday & Monday's rough forecasts and lack of fishermen signed up to go almost assures this was the last red snapper trip for 2007. Give the office a call, make your reservations and help this not be the last red snapper for 2007. The Capt. John's office phones will ring at Pier 19 if you call either 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853. Call today, the probable eight month closure of the red snapper fishery in Federal waters is going to seem like eight years; make the call and get a late shot at these great fish, the red snapper.

This afternoon's bay and jetty fishing trip was run using the partyboat Capt. John. Steering the boat and the 27 fishermen toward a great fishing afternoon was Capt. Tony Langston. Baits were fished at or near the bottom in the area of Galveston's south jetty resulted in many knot-straining hookups. Those solid hookups numbered at least fifty-three. That's the number of bull redfish that were lifted onto the deck, only eighteen of which were tagged and kept. Here's a list...... Read More

The 38 fishermen aboard the partyboat Capt. John were in for one of those nice red snapper catches that will shortly be stopped. That stoppage will be the closure of the red snapper fishery in Federal waters, October 31 is the last day out there and it's going to be closed for six to eight months. While it would be nice if all the trips made before the closure had a catch like today's, it's not guaranteed...but you never know. Capt....... Read More
