Collins Lake Fish Report 10-16-07

Our surface temperature is 65 degrees which means the lake is "turning over". When the lake turns, the temperature is the same from top to bottom and the thermocline has gone. The thermocline only appears after the lake "warms up" again which won't occur until late spring. With the absence of the thermocline, the trout are now EVERYWHERE and not deep where they hide during the summer when the surface temperature is too high for their survival.

Howard Victoriono from Napa e-mailed to us that he fished from his boat by the dam and they caught 3 nice Rainbows using Nightcrawlers. Grant Myachi and Simon Palma walked the shoreline near the dam tossing crankbaits and were hoping for a nice Big Bass for supper but were surprised instead by a 3 pound Rainbow who took the bait.

Trolling is picking up says Brent Lewis & Ray from Roseville. They trolled right off the islands in the middle of the lake with a Needlefish and each took a trout home. Young Robert from Gridley was also fishing in a boat near the islands with worms and caught a decent Rainbow Trout. Jerry Freeman of Live Oak caught a 3 lb. 12 oz. Catfish then broke his own record with a 7 lb. 11 oz. Catfish. Jerry always uses live crawdads and fishes in Elmer's Cove (just past the campground towards the bridge). A couple of local guys have had really good luck up towards the bridge where they recorded the surface temperature at 60 degrees. Using Powerbait and worms they have landed many beautiful trout.

As of last Friday we abandoned the main boat launching ramp until the lake fills up more. We have an alternate launch ramp which is graveled and will accommodate 2 wheel or 4X4 trucks. The alternate ramp is located close to our dam at Road 6. For campers who have Motorhomes and want to bring their boats, we will be launching them and taking them out for you at no cost to you during this period of time.
