Local action was on the slow side this week for Santa Cruz anglers, but
other nearby areas provided some good action.
Chris' Fishing Trips out of Monterey Harbor has been traveling around the corner to fish the Point Sur area lately. The resulting scores are impressive. According to Jen Linney from Chris', the boat has been picking up limits for all anglers aboard of big vermillion and olive rockfish. "We also picked up the random halibut last week," Linney quipped. ??Chris' sent out boats each day last week and came home with limits every trip.
Locally it is a bit slower. The reefs off West Cliff are producing some decent scores of schoolie rockfish and the occasional lingcod, according to Frank Ealy from Capitola Boat and Bait. Ealy also rents skiffs from the Santa Cruz Wharf and says his clients have been consistent in catching half or three quarter limits from the skiffs.
Now that Ano Nuevo is closed, a few local boats have been traveling to the Franklin Point area for similar fishing. Located just north of Ano, the reefs at Franklin are producing limits of quality rockfish, big lingcod and the occasional halibut, according to Todd Fraser from Bayside Marine. Fraser fished Franklin Point for limits of rockfish and lings plus a 24-pound halibut last week.
Jim Rubin from Captain Jimmy Sportfishing reminds us that Dungeness crab season opens for sport anglers on November 3, the first Saturday in November. Rubin will be running combo trips featuring crabs and rockfish for the month of November, then crab and sand dabs when rockfish season closes. Dungeness must be five and three quarter inches wide for sport anglers on private boats and the bag limit is 10 crabs each. On sport charters, the size limit is an even six inches, and anglers may keep only six of the delicious crustaceans.
