Mike Lackey brought his Vagabond home to Pt. Loma Sportfishing September 29 after a six-day trip with 23 passengers. He said he found good to great yellowtail fishing at Cedros Island, with few small fish, and had a dozen halibut at Cedros and San martin islands. He also did well fishing for albacore.
The best halibut was a 46.4-pound whopper caught by Steve Howard of Pt. Loma on a sardine and a sliding sinker with 20-pound line.
Ron Brown of Lakeside won first place for a 36.2-pound albacore. It bit on a sardine and a 2/0 Mustad hook. He fished with 30-pound Big Game line, a Saltiga 30 reel and a six-foot Calstar rod.
Kurt Hessian of Fullerton plays football at Troy High School, and won second place, for a 33.8-pounder. Rick Karle of Front Royal, VA was third, for a 33.6-pound albie.
