GRAND SLAM SERIES PRO-AM BASS TOURNAMENT
9-18-2007
Yvette Rodriguez
HI-SEAS is the proud sponsor of the GRAND SLAM SERIES bass tournaments, which carry the name of their extremely popular Grand Slam monofilament & braid line. The series concluded its first year with a week of festivities and the four-day finals on Kentucky Lake. Fishing was hard under extremely hot conditions and lake surface temperatures that ranged into the 90's. A few competitors racked up impressive catches to stake their claim to the lion's share of the $92,000 that was paid out.
HI-SEAS Sales Manager, Steve Miller, was on hand for the final days of the event and to help award the trophies, cash and two Mercury powered Triton Bass Boats that went to the series pro and amateur division winners.
"Everyone at HI-SEAS is excited about the Grand Slam Series and our involvement in ABA tournament fishing," said Miller during the weigh in. "This year is just the beginning for the series with the number of tournaments to double in 2008 and an expansion to some western lakes as well, but the really big news is a Triton bass boat will be awarded to the winner of all the upcoming Grand Slam Series events courtesy of Triton Boats. That's sure to create quite a buzz in the competition fishing community and further increase participation in this fast growing series in year two."
The big Pro winner at Kentucky Lake was "run and gun" David Young of Mayfield, Kentucky, who bested a very competitive field with a total weight of 59.12 pounds to win first place and take home a fully rigged Triton 21X bass boat valued at $50,000 in addition to a beautiful trophy and cash. This hit and run artist did his best to overcome high water temperatures and lethargic bass by concentrating on shallow water weed beds early and then fishing drop offs during the heat of the day never spending more than a few minutes in any spot that didn't produce. It was a tour-de-force performance as Young was the only angler to post a limit catch each day of the event!
The Grand Slam Series is open to professionals with boats and amateurs who fish the back seats as co-anglers and compete for their own set of prizes. Alabama resident Brian Talmadge took first place in the Co-Angler division in the finals with an impressive performance and took home a Triton Tr186 bass boat powered by Mercury with a retail value of $31,500. At the weigh in, Brian gave up his back seat formula for success.
"The secret to being a good co-angler is the drop shot," he advised everyone in the audience. "These pros are too good to fish behind using other techniques so I use the drop shot to get the attention of what few bass they miss."
The Grand Slam Series Pro Angler of the Year award goes to Pat Anderson of Ardmore, Alabama for his consistent performance throughout the series. A seasoned tournament competitor, Pat fished all five of the series events and scored high enough in the standings to rack up the Angler of the Year award for his trouble. The Grand Slam Series Co-Angler of the Year award went to Billy Appling of Vestavia Hills, Alabama. This professional firefighter and paramedic put together a strong record throughout the tournament series, which included three trips to the podium with top five standings and a win at the Guntersville tournament. He was rewarded at the finals for his overall performance at the series' closing event at Kentucky Lake.
HI-SEAS would like to congratulate all the winners of the inaugural Grand Slam Series events and thank all the anglers who came out to fish them.
