Saw Some Crashing
9-13-2007
Bill Roecker
Skipper Norm Kagawa brought home his Shogun to Fisherman's Landing September 13 after a five-day trip with 26 anglers to Benitos and Cedros Islands. They spent the last day searching for albacore offshore.
"We saw some crashing," angler Jeff Cochems of Oceanside said, "and we threw baits at `em, but no bites. It was rough out there, too. Fortunately, Cedros was pretty much wide open on the yellowtail, and we also got six good halibut."
"Tuesday afternoon," Jeff continued, "we saw some flares go up and Norm and (Second Skipper Bruce) Smith turned the boat around, called the Coast Guard but we couldn't find any boats or wreckage of any sort."
Les Mosher of Reno, NV took first place with a Cedros halibut that weighed 37.6-pounds. Les used a dropper loop with a sardine on the boat's rental gear to land the fish.
"Even though the wind was breezy," said Les, "we still had a good time."
Pete Cooney of Santa Ana took second with a 33.4-pound Cedros yellowtail. It was "?Ķthe last yellow brought aboard the boat," said Pete. Steve Maxson of Hacienda Heights was third for a 30.6-pound halibut.
