Rod Rack Trip

Bill Roecker

"We went everywhere," said Shogun skipper Norm Kagawa after docking the boat at Fisherman's Landing October 23. "We fished from the 13 Spot at the top of The Ridge all the way down to the Potato Bank. There's lots and lots of marlin there; we had half a dozen going at once.

"We tried to raise some 150-pound tunas down there, but they wouldn't go. These guys were conservation-minded, and they released a lot of fish. Our champ was Mark Bowers of Fairfield. He released over 40 fish."

Adam Harris of Escondido won first place for am 80-pound tuna he bagged with a squid on a 9/0 Eagle Claw hook. It was his best tuna ever, he said, and he used 50-pound Izorline and 60-pound Izorline Spectra backing on an Avet reel and a Calstar 755 XH rod. The fish fought for a half-hour.

Jim Sullivan of San Mateo was second, for a 78-pounder, and Mike Toetter of San Diego was third, for a 45-pound wahoo. Erik Nelson stood in with a 77-pound wahoo he took on an Ahi Jet in Petrolero color. Jim Bowman of San Diego won the Rollo jackpot for the best yellowtail, a 35.8-pounder. Chartermaster was Steve Volker of The Rod Rack.
