Change For Better
9-7-2006
Bill Roecker
"Hello everyone, well when things change, they change for the better," read the Royal Polaris report for September 3. "We started at the south end of the island. Once we dropped the anchor, it was about 5 minutes before we hooked our first Yellowfin. We kept 2 to 3 fish going most of the morning. Most of the Yellowfin were in the 50 to 65-pound category, with a few going over. We got 59 Yellowfin and 4 Yellowtail. The Yellowtail were all over the 30-pound mark, with Mike Candland catching the largest one, estimated weight, about 45 pounds.
"The largest Yellowfin caught today was caught by Brita Goldsmith. The key today was 40-pound test, a short topshot, and 40 pound fluorocarbon. Our weather was just perfect. We had just enough breeze to keep the kites up, but it was still a very warm day. Air temperature was around 85 degrees, most of the day. It was like fishing the Clarion in the old days."
The next day's report said, ""Fishing started out a bit slow this morning, but I guess the fish have to sleep also. But once the school bell rang, it was time for business once again. We keep 2 to 3 fish going most of the day, with a brief slow down around 13:00 hours, then it was right back to work. Most of the Yellowfin were in the 50 to 70-pound range, and I think we might have one around 90 pounds. We ended up with 68 Yellowfin tuna, and 4 Yellowtail, which two of those were released by Jim Alijan."
On September 5, the report was, "The weather continues to be out of this world, the fishing is just excellent. The Yellowfin are still on the prowl. Our morning started out early, with the first Yellowtail hitting the deck at 04:10 hours. But it didn't take Mr. Yellowfin very long to follow up. We had good fish around the boat most of the day, and we kept 3 to 4 fish going most of the time. The Yellowfin came in two groups today. One group of fish were in the 75 to 100-pound category, and the others were in the 50 to 70-pound category. We did have a few fish we didn't land, if you know what I mean. This has been a very excellent trip for quality Yellowfin and Yellowtail."
Skipper Bill Santiago docked the rig at Fisherman's Landing September 7. Jerry Coburn of Ft. Ludlow, WA won first place for a 97-pound tuna. He said it took a squid baited on an 11/0 ringed Super Mutu hook and 60-pound Izorline. He fished with a TLD 20 reel and a Calstar 765 M rod.
Jeff Jedinak of San Clemente was second, for a 90.7-pounder, and Ben Ng of San Diego won third place for an 87.4-pound yellowfin tuna.
