After docking at Fisherman's Landing September 5 after a five-day Braid charter with Jan Howard as chartermistress, Shogun skipper Norm Kagawa weighed the fish.
"It was a good trip," he said. "We were there when they started to bite. We had nice hot weather at the islands, and we didn't see any big south swell from John."
Young Yi of Rosemead won first place for a 78.4-pound yellowfin. "It was a 20-minute fight," he said. "I used the rail."
Yi fished a sardine on a 1/0 Charlie Brown circle hook with a ring, tied to 40-pound Izorline. He used an Avet JX reel and a Calstar 765 XL rod.
David Tracy of Encinitas was second, for a 65.6-pounder, and Brandon Friend, 14 years old and a student and football player at Liberty Christian High in Huntington Beach won third place for a 65.2-pound yellowfin tuna.
