Mazatlan Fishing Report

8-14-2014
Larry Edwards

The sailfish bite picked up this past week from Mazatlan and the "Aries IX" lead the fleet with 10 sailfish, (5 released) for three fishing days. While the black & blue marlin have yet to show up, there was sufficient sailfish action to keep the anglers busy and excited. The reported catches for the fleet's 14 offshore fishing days reflected 20 sailfish, (8 released) and 5 dorado. The inshore super pangas fished two days and reflected limits of dorado for both days, fishing around the buoys. Most of the dorado are now in the 10-15 lb. ranges and providing great fun for the fly fishing angler and light tackle enthusiast.

Mazatlan Climate: It has been one of those scattered shower weeks for Mazatlan and the surrounding area that ranged from sprinkles in the early week to heavy rains for the weekend and slated to continue tthrough next Thursday. Air temps ranged from 73 nights to 91 daytime highs and the humidity level at 94%.

Sea Conditions: Surface breezes from calm to 13 mph and flowing mostly from the westerly directions. Sea temps varied from 89 inshore to 87-88 in the offshore waters with good clarity at about 14 miles or so.

Best Fishing Area: The better sailfish bite is near the 18 mile mark out to the southwest of the Marina El Cid and the better dorado bite continues near the buoys.

Best Bait/Lure: Sailfish and dorado were biting well on the rigged baits. Dorado a little more eager to bite the smaller artificial and filleted baits.

Bait Supply: An excellent supply of bait is currently available, both live bait at $1.00 per bait and fresh baits for rigging, included in the charter rate.
