Hi Everyone,

I can't believe July is almost behind us.

It's been an incredible month. As the summer marches on with more warm water moving in, we are experiencing increased action and adventure.

Daily, more schools of bigger Yellowfin Tuna are starting to bite.

This warm water will bring Dorado and other game fish as time goes on.

We always start every trip with a seminar to get everyone up to speed on what has been biting, as well as the latest techniques and tackle to use to ensure your success.

For many years, we have had sardine as our primary live bait.

This year, we are finding ourselves out on our trips with a smaller, less familiar bait for many, the Anchovy.

I chuckle as I write this, for I grew up, like many of you, fishing with nothing but anchovy.

While I could go on for hours about technique, bait selection, proper ways to handle and hook an anchovy, I will reserve todays newsletter to tackle selection.

Keep it simple, and don't over think your gear.

Today's angler shows up armed to do battle with two-speed reels, lever drags, fluorocarbon top shots and spectra line.

I see many fisherman with every hook imaginable on the market from lazer sharp, circle, ringed, "J" and so on.

Let's bring it back to the basics.

Fishing an anchovy requires a smaller reel, lighter line and a longer rod.

Try a seven foot rod with 20lb straight monofilament and a #4 hook.

If the anchovy is a bit larger, try a #2 or #1.

A single speed conventional reel is very effective.

Some of the smaller 2 speeds will work as well, just be certain your reel has been serviced and is well balanced, end bearings lubed and is ready to fly line a small bait.

This will give you the edge on the grounds.

The message is, come diversified. Don't leave your heavy gear at home, just come prepared to fish a smaller bait.

It has been many years since we have had good anchovy to fish with, and all these fish offshore will inhale a properly presented 'chovie.

Ok, enough on that topic.

2014 has been an exception season offshore. 100lb Bluefin. Limit catches of Yellowfin. Throughout all of this incredible action, I believe the best is yet to come.
