Two chartermasters, Jack Hill and John Wadden, were aboard the Shogun when the rig returned to the dock August 16 following a five-day trip with 21 anglers.

Bruce Smith skippered the five-day Willfish Tackle expedition with 21 passengers.

"We spent the day at Cedros, chasing yellowtail and scratching out a day of it," wrote Smith on August 14. "John Vanderwier landed a 34-pound halibut, while Larry Whatley was up to his old tricks again, and getting them on the Salas Super 6X surface iron. It's an incredible sight to see 25 to 35-pound fish boiling and foaming on bait balls not even a jig cast away."

John Vanderwier of North Lake Tahoe won first and third places, for his 36.2-pound albacore and a 34.4-pound halibut. He got the big albie on a sardine with a 4/0 Mustad 94150 hook, 40-pound Ande line, a TLD 20 reel and a Calstar 6465 rod.

"I was hoping for a halibut and a white seabass," said John. "I was happy to get the halibut."

Oceanside rod builder Larry Whatley won second place for a 36-pound albacore.
