Mazatlan Fishing Report

3-20-2014
Leonard Phillips

A very slow week for charters but the striper action continues in full-swing and unabated by the full moon phase. High boat for the week was the "Aries IX", skippered by Captain Carlos Valenzuela, reporting in for a catch of 4 stripers, (3 released) for a single day's fishing. Accordingg to Geronimo Cevallos, there were only 10 offshore fishing days this past week that accounted for a total of 16 stripers, (11 releases) and 1 sailfish, (released) and 6 dorado. There was only one single super panga fishing day that reported in with a single striped marlin for their fishing day. This fishing from Mazatlan is absolutely remarkable for the month of March and even more incredible to have the bite continue right through the full moon phase. With the water temperatures continuing to hold up in the mid to upper 70s, the bite is likely to continue right through the normally slow winter fishing season.

Mazatlan Climate: Mostly sunny with warm days and a partly cloudy sky for the weekend. Air temps varied from 55 nights to 87 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Inshore temps have fallen off to 74 degrees, rising to 76 at about 10 miles and again to 77 at about 18 miles offshore. Surface breezes are flowing from the westerly directions to 11 mph.

Best Fishing Area: The better fishing continues to be out to the southwest of the Marina El Cid, starting at about 18 miles and working outbound from there.

Best Bait/Lure: The rigged trolling baits are still providing the best action for the billfish.

Bait Supply: Excellent supply of both, fresh baits for rigging and live bait if desired at $1.00 per bait.
