Makos Under Pursuit

Roy Rose docked Royal Polaris at Fisherman's Landing August 1 after a five-day trip; the Taka Tanaka's Tackle charter.

"We fished for two half days at Guadalupe," he said. "We got there at 11 a.m. and left the next afternoon at two. Then we fished offshore, mostly for albacore of mixed size. We got some, too, and we saw several makos being chased by albacore at the surface. We even got some fish off those deals; 17 at one stop and 11 at another. The albacore were coming up and brushing against those sharks. Then the sharks would take off and the albies would chase ???em. The water there was 73 degrees."

Alan Otsuka of Long Beach won first place for a 71.6-pound yellowfin. His fish and second-place winner Su Matsuno's 66.8-pound tuna went in the refrigerated sea water tanks to Five Star and Sportsman's Seafood, and so weren't available for photos. Su is from Whittier.

"It's my first overnight trip," she said. "And it was for several nights."

Marvin Chan won third place for a 66.2-pounder. He said it bit a sardine on a 4/0 Mutu hook, and that he fished with 40-pound blue Izorline on a Tiagra 12 reel and a Calstar 765 L rod built by Taka. Chan turned the handle and got his fish in ten minutes.
