Fish Report for 12-9-2013
6,000lbs of rainbow trout have been stocked at Laguna Nigel Lake in the first 3 weeks!
12-9-2013
Laguna Niguel Staff
2,000lbs of trout will be stocked Wednesday December 11th.
TROUT:
The trout fishing was excellent last week due to 10' visibility and 59 degree water temp. Most fishermen caught 5 fish limits within the first 2 hours of fishing with many double limits reported. Trout are averaging 2 lb to 3 lb's in size with a good number of 4 lb to 10 lb fish weighed in at the scales last week. Fly fishing went "wide open" in the flats as many float tubers reported catch and releasing an average of 20-30 trout each day. Trout are hitting #14-16 bead head midges 4" off the bottom with black/copper and black/red colors working best.
Shoreline fishermen are catching trout from the big tree in Zone 1 to the creek inlet with Zone 2 and Zone 3 producing the most fish. Chartruse and Rainbow Power Bait along with inflated night crawlers dipped with "Bite On" scent has been working best for bait. Jig fishermen continue to enjoy a "wide open" trout bite along the shoreline in Zone 3 the first 2 days after a stocking before the fish settle in deeper water. Boats doing well with bait in deep water by the bubble holes in front of the concession building and trolling SC shiner crank baits in the channel on both sides of the big island. Continued clear skies and cold weather will ensure another week of 'insane' trout fishing this week!
Lots of big trout are included in this week's stocking!
Big trout of the week was caught by John Miners of Capo Beach with a 10 lb 10 oz trout that hit a chart/white "Trout King" mouse tail dipped with "Bite On" garlic off a boat in deeper water by the bubble holes. Kyle Oates of Newport Beach landed a 10lb 02oz trout trolling an Owner "cultiva" crank bait in the channel by the big island. Juan Gomez of Santa Ana topped off his "double limit" with a 9lb 12oz trout that hit an inflated night crawler dipped in "Bite On" roe scent off the shoreline in Zone 3. There were 19 trout in the 5 lb to 8 lb class weighed in at the scales last week!
BASS:
The bass bite slowed down last week with only a few smaller bass reported by the fly fishermen using midges in the flats.
Channel Catfish:
Good numbers of catfish have been feeding in the creek inlet during the heavy rain. Night Crawlers with "Bite On" garlic scent has been working best with a 8 lb 05 oz catfish topping the scales last week.
