On July 7, Red Rooster III skipper Andy Cates wrote: "After another tough day we decided to leave Cedros and head up to the off shore grounds. With slim pickin's we were fortunate to get and afternoon drift for 60 mixed Bluefin and Yellowfin. Also some nicer yellows on the kelps which produced 37; a far cry from the fishing up here the last 3 days but we were happy to get some action.
"So far today the water is completely different and we are in search of fish again. We are getting a few yellows on kelps; it is nice to see this better grade fish on kelps."
At H&M Landing July 9, Cates weighed the fish. Rich Vos was the first place winner, for a 66-pound yellowfin. He said it fought for 45 minutes after he hooked it on a 4/0 Flyliner hook, 30-pound Big Game line and 30-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader. He used a Trinidad 30 reel and a Truline D-8 rod.
Gary Jorgensen of Harbor, OR won second place for a 60.5-pound yellowfin, and Mike Pattullo of Napa won third place, for a 59.9-pound yellowfin tuna.
The three were joined in the lineup shot by Eric Bergan of Kona, who had the best yellowtail, a 37-pounder that ate a Sea Strike 33 in squid color, and Mark Escalle of Huntington Beach, who got a 35-pound bluefin on a black and purple Megabait dart.
