Skipper John Klein docked his Qualifier 105 after a five-day L.A. Rod & Reel chartered trip. The boat's 24 anglers got off at Point Loma Sportfishing July 26. Dave Levinson was chartermaster. The trip caught a wide variety of fish.
"Cedros is starting to get good," said Skipper Klein. "Dorado are starting to show up at the kelps. We're seeing tuna here and there and these kelp yellowtail are quality, good-sized fish."
Dave Permut of Santa Clarita took first place for a 36.4-pound yellowtail. Permut used a 2/0 Owner circle hook, 30-pound XXX Izorline, a Torium 20 reel and a Calstar 700M rod.
"It was a great trip," said Permut. "The Qualifier always puts on a good show."
Second place went to Tom Carlisle, of Rolling Hills Estates, for a 33.6-pound yellowtail caught on an Eagle Claw 318 hook, 17-pound P-Line, a Trinidad 14 reel and a G-Loomis Musky rod.
Long range legend Dan Felger of Lake Sherwood was third place for a 33.2-pound yellowtail caught on a 4/0 Eagle Claw 2004, 40-pound Momoi, a Penn 12T 2-speed custom modified by Cal Sheets and a Calstar 700H rod.
"We couldn't get the big fish to bite," said Felger, "but it didn't matter, we had a great time."
Angler Marv Smith of Chatsworth had a good time at the weigh-in. "I was in the jackpot for about 30 seconds. How much do you get for fourth place?"
